PRIEST RIVER – The Spartans softball team lost three away games in the past week, two to Kellogg and one to Colville.

On Tuesday, April 25, the Spartans lost both halves of a doubleheader against the Wildcats at Kellogg High School. Priest River lost the first game 15-2 and the second game, 21-6.

In Game 1, the Wildcats took an early 13-0 lead after two innings of play. They were led by Alex Karst who had three RBI singles in the contest. On the mound, it was Macy Jerome who went five full innings, giving up four hits, two runs (one earned), and recording eight strikeouts for Kellogg.

The Spartans eventually struck in the top of the third with two runs of their own. Rylee Hansen hit a two-run homerun over the center field fence to make it a 13-2 ball game. Madilyn Rose was the only Spartan with multiple hits on the day; she had two singles in the Spartans 15-2 loss.

In Game 2, the Spartans were able to put more runs on the board, but could not keep up with the Wildcats who scored all 21 of their runs in the first three innings.

Priest River did strike first, scoring four runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Kellogg pitcher Charlie McDaniel hit two batters, walked another batter, and then made an error that allowed Lily Meyers to reach base and score a run. Addison Kingery, Brodie Hansen, Cheyenne Thompson, and Rose all crossed the plate in the first inning.

The Spartans would not score again until the top of the fifth when Laney Rhine and Lindsie Naccarato both hit RBI singles.

Thompson pitched a solid two innings to close out the game for the Spartans. She allowed just one hit, two runs (zero earned), and four walks on the mound.

The very next day, Wednesday, April 26 the girls traveled to Colville, where they lost to the Crimson Hawks, 23-5.

The Spartans got on the board first with two runs thanks to a solo home run by Brodie Hansen and an RBI single by Kae Brown. In the second, the Spartans tacked on three more runs thanks to hits by Rylee Hansen and Jaylein Zylstra, but found themselves down 15-5 after two full innings.

Colville was led by Skyler Struck who had three singles and three RBI’s on the day. Pitcher Payton Emra also threw three solid innings for the Crimson Hawks; she gave up one hit, zero runs, and recorded seven strikeouts in the 23-5 victory over Spartans.

Priest River (3-11) will be back in action versus Kellogg at home on Friday. They will also travel to Newport to take on the Grizzlies, a team they defeated earlier this season, for a doubleheader on Saturday.
