Gurdjieff did not have a clue

In today’s world the word “cult” carries with it many negative connotations. So naturally, Lee Santa, being a loyal follower of G.I. Gurdjieff, would insist that Gurdjieffism is not a cult. After all, who wants to be thought of as a cultist?

A few thoughts on commissioners, transparency

A few thoughts on improving transparency as the new board of Bonner County Commissioners takes the helm. Commissioners have met privately to set the agendas for their upcoming regular weekly business meetings, in the past. Of dubious legality, this practice should end, with their agenda-setting meetings duly agendized with minutes taken; and they should be open to the public as well, in accordance with Idaho's open meeting law.

Church helps mining community evolve in dark, warming Arctic

LONGYEARBYEN, Norway (AP) — Social life in the Norwegian village of Longyearbyen — hemmed in by mountains, a glacier and a fjord on a remote Arctic island — has long revolved around its only church. Founded for and by coal miners, Svalbard Kirke is literally a beacon in the dark – its sanctuary and fireplace-warmed lounge stay open 24/7 even in winter, when the sun never rises this close to the North Pole. As climate change impacts the Svalbard archipelago faster and deeper than the rest of the world, its pastor is helping the community of miners and environmentalists grapple with transformation in this unforgiving, awe-inspiring wilderness.

Bill aims to make ballot initiatives tougher

An Idaho lawmaker has introduced legislation that would ask voters to change the state's constitution to make it harder to get initiatives on the ballot. Republican Sen. Doug Okuniewicz of Hayden introduced the joint resolution Wednesday in the Senate State Affairs Committee. If approved, it would ask voters to change the Idaho Constitution so that lawmakers could reenact tougher ballot initiative rules that were thrown out by the Idaho Supreme Court in 2021. The tougher rules would require signature gatherers to get 6% of registered voters from each of Idaho's 35 legislative districts, rather than from 18 of the districts, and within a short timespan.

US proposes once-a-year COVID shots for most Americans

U.S. health officials want to make COVID-19 vaccinations more like the annual flu shot. The Food and Drug Administration on Monday proposed a simplified approach so that most adults and children would get a once-a-year shot. Americans would no longer have to keep track of how many shots they've received or when. The proposal comes as boosters have become a hard sell. The FDA is asking a panel of outside vaccine experts to weigh in on the new approach at a meeting Thursday. The agency will present data suggesting most Americans have enough protection to move to once-a-year shots.

It was time for a change — and Dub's owners Marty and Jeralyn Mire wanted it to be on their terms. Marty Mire was ready to retire on more than just a part-time basis but neither he nor his wife, Jeralyn, wanted to close their iconic Sandpoint restaurant. So they went to the city with an offer: Do you want to buy Dub's? (Or at least the property on which the restaurant sits.)

BTAA says abandoned dogs' health improving

Better Together Animal Alliance estimates that "Sugar," one of 18 husky-type dogs abandoned in the region, had less than a week to live when she was found. While Sugar is getting better, she has a long way to go, BTAA officials said in a press release Friday. The other eight dogs connected to the case being cared for at BTAA have made great strides since being brought to the shelter. The dogs, found abandoned over the past few weeks in the Spirit Lake, Blanchard and Athol areas, are at the center of an animal neglect case by the Bonner County Sheriff's Office. A suspect has been identified and BCSO officials said they expect to seek criminal charges after the investigation is completed.

Land Board adds new endowment land

18,000 acres of new endowment land benefits public schools, supports idaho’s economy and preserves recreation

It was a deal that the Idaho Department of Lands couldn't refuse. When the state had a chance to bid on almost 18,050 acres of timberland spread across the five northern counties, officials didn't hesitate. “Adding an additional 18,000 acres of timberland to the endowment portfolio increases future revenue for the beneficiaries while also supporting Idaho’s broader economy,” IDL director Dustin Miller said. The land included in the bid package was offered as a package deal and offers good quality timberland, Sharla Arledge, IDL public information officer, said. Proceeds from the sale of endowment cottage sites and commercial real estate were used to pay for the properties.

Rep. Barbieri sponsors resolution to propose rule change that would allow bills to be introduced only by committee

Rep. Vito Barbieri is sponsoring a new resolution that would eliminate so-called personal bills in the Idaho House of Representatives. If adopted, House Resolution 2 would eliminate seven words from House Rule 6 so that the rule would state “No bill shall be introduced except by committee…” Most bills in the Idaho House go through the committee process, where a panel of legislators votes on whether to introduce a bill and then usually conducts a public hearing on a bill before taking a vote on whether to send the bill to the floor for a vote of the full Idaho House. The resolution does not apply to the Idaho Senate.

French-born artist finds inspiration on remote Easter Island

Rapa Nui – the remote Chilean territory in the mid-Pacific widely known as Easter Island – is home to a Catholic church featuring artwork that reflects the islanders' ancestral culture as well as Christian beliefs. Among the works are stained glass windows -- created by a French-born artist – that portray figures resembling Rapa Nui's inhabitants. The artist, Delphine Poulain, was born in Paris 52 years ago and has been in love with Rapa Nui since she first visited in 1994. At the time, Poulain lived in Tahiti, working as a professional sailor. One trip to Rapa Nui was enough to envision a future home in the land of extinct volcanoes and monolithic statues called moai.

Among the questions on the survey regarded connecting volunteers with those in need, Wilson said. Overwhelmingly, she said residents suggested the city find a way to help. That led employee Holly Ellis to reach out to the Community Resource EnVision Center in mid-December to see if they could help.

BOISE (AP) — Investigators seized stained bedding, strands of what looked like hair and a single glove when they searched the Washington state apartment of a graduate student charged with stabbing four University of Idaho students to death. Court documents unsealed Tuesday include a list of 15 things taken from Bryan Kohberger's campus apartment at Washington State University. No weapons were among the seized items. Kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary in connection with the slayings of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin in the neighboring town of Moscow, Idaho. He has not yet had an opportunity to enter a plea and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in June.

New guidance: Use drugs, surgery early for obesity in kids

New guidelines suggest children struggling with obesity should be evaluated and treated early and aggressively. The American Academy of Pediatrics says treatments can include medication for kids as young as 12 and surgery for those as young as 13. The group said Monday delaying treatment to see whether children and teens outgrow or overcome obesity only makes things worse. Left untreated, obesity can lead to lifelong health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes and depression. Nearly 20% of kids and teens in the U.S. are obese.

King's daughter calls for bold action over words

America has honored Martin Luther King Jr. with a federal holiday for nearly four decades yet still hasn’t fully embraced and acted on the lessons from the slain civil rights leader, his youngest daughter said Monday. The Rev. Bernice King, who leads The King Center in Atlanta, said leaders — especially politicians — too often cheapen her father’s legacy into a “comfortable and convenient King” offering easy platitudes. “We love to quote King in and around the holiday. ... But then we refuse to live King 365 days of the year,” she declared at the commemorative service at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where her father once preached.

Don’t let public schools become 'Peter'

Most of us are familiar with the expression, “robbing Peter to pay Paul.” It means that Peter is being robbed so that Paul can receive a benefit. To mix metaphors, it means that Peter is “getting the short end of the stick.” That is exactly what some right-wing legislators have in mind for Idaho’s public schools. In their scheme, public schools would get to be “Peter” so that private schools can enjoy being “Paul.”

The family retained the 48-acre homestead with the historic ski and sled hill until Joe Weisz’s death in 2021. When the parcel was put up for sale, the community looked to KLT to preserve the beloved iconic property. Set along Pine Street Loop, the 48-acre parcel includes forest, meadows, a large pond, and structures associated with a historic homestead. A white sedan: How police tracked slayings suspect

Authorities say a key piece of evidence in the case of four University of Idaho students stabbed to death in November turned out to be surveillance footage showing a white sedan driving past the victims' home. According to a police affidavit unsealed Thursday, the car drove past three times before the stabbings early on Nov. 13 and was recorded speeding away afterwards. Investigators said they later tracked the car — and eventually, DNA evidence — to Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old graduate student in criminology at Washington State University, just across the state border. Kohberger made an initial appearance in an Idaho courtroom Thursday after being extradited from Pennsylvania, where he was arrested last week.

It's been nearly two months after four University of Idaho students were killed near campus and two weeks since a suspect was arrested and charged with the crime. Classes at the Moscow, Idaho campus resumed Wednesday, and the picturesque school grounds are starting to feel a little closer to normal. Students are walking the university's frosty sidewalks and crowding the food court. University spokesperson Jodi Walker says there's a general feeling of relief in the air, and in-person enrollment numbers are looking good. Many students had temporarily switched to online classes after the killings. The suspect in the case, Bryan Kohberger, will have a status hearing in court Thursday.

U.S. approves Alzheimer's drug that modestly slows disease

U.S. health officials have approved a new Alzheimer's drug that modestly slows the brain-robbing disease. The Food and Drug Administration granted the approval Friday for patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's. It's the first drug that's been convincingly shown to slow the decline in memory and thinking that define the disease. But the $26,500-a-year medication comes with downsides, including potentially serious side effects and frequent drug infusions. Alzheimer's patients will have to decide whether those issues are worth the drug's benefit, which likely amounts to slowing the disease by several months. Insurers are expected to only cover the drug for people with early-stage Alzheimer's and other hallmarks of the disease.

Idaho governor touts funding for education, public safety

Idaho Gov. Brad Little has announced proposals for property tax relief, education funding, and efforts to fight the influx of illegal fentanyl during his annual State of the State address. The Republican governor's speech, where he outlines his top policy priorities, kicks off the state's legislative session each year. Little said on Monday that property tax relief should come in the form of increased state funding for local infrastructure, lifting some of the burden that local governments might otherwise place on property owners. He also announced a proposed scholarship program for graduating Idaho high school students and increased funding to fight the influx of fentanyl.

Let’s rethink the use of train whistles

The thought hit me when I was hiking the Mickinnick Trail the other day and heard the blaring, shrieking whistle from the Burlington Northern freight passing in the valley far below. I gritted my teeth and frowned at how the magic of forest quietude was being ripped away by this industrial blast. Then a question occurred to me: What possible function could be served by my hearing this whistle? Drivers on the road crossing the tracks in front of the train need to be warned of the train’s approach. But why does a hiker high in the mountains need to know a train is passing?

Idaho court tosses lawsuits aiming to block abortion bans

The Idaho Supreme Court has ruled that the state Constitution does not implicitly enshrine abortion as a fundamental right. The court dismissed lawsuits brought by Planned Parenthood against the governor and leaders of the Legislature that had sought to block the implementation and enforcement of the state’s new abortion bans. The head of Planned Parenthood in the region said the court's ruling created a dark day for the state of Idaho, but abortion foes applauded the decision. A majority of the justices said in the ruling that the state Constitution offers no fundamental right to abortion.

Police: Idaho slaying suspect's DNA found at crime scene

Investigators working the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students found a tan leather knife sheath at the scene that had a single source of the suspect's DNA on the button snap, according to court documents. The affidavit by Moscow, Idaho Police Cpl. Brett Payne was made public Thursday just minutes before a court hearing for the man accused in the Nov. 13 deaths, 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger. Kohberger arrived in Idaho Wednesday on a law enforcement jet after his arrest in the case last week in Pennsylvania. He is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary.

Next steps and new details in Idaho killings

It's been weeks since four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in their beds, and now some of the mystery surrounding the case may soon fall away. Bryan Kohberger, who was attending a nearby university around the time of the killings, is being returned to Idaho to face charges of first-degree murder after his arrest in Pennsylvania last week. Court documents that could shed light on many unanswered questions are expected to be unsealed once he's in Idaho. But a new gag order from an Idaho judge is deepening the secrecy surrounding the investigation into the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.

Making pig livers humanlike in quest to ease organ shortage

Scientists are transforming pig livers to look and act like human ones, part of a quest to ease the nation's organ shortage. First workers in a suburban Minneapolis lab dissolve pig cells that made the organ function, leaving ghostly semitranslucent scaffolds floating in large jars. To complete the metamorphosis, they infuse those shells with human cells from donated livers that went untransplanted. It's all highly experimental. But manufacturer Miromatrix is making plans for first-step human testing — an experiment outside a patient's body, to see how well a bioengineered liver can filter blood.

Idaho slayings suspect agrees to extradition to face charges

A criminology graduate student accused of the November slayings of four University of Idaho students agreed Tuesday to be extradited from Pennsylvania, where he was arrested last week, to face charges in Idaho. Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old doctoral student at Washington State University — a short drive from the murder scene in the neighboring state — will be transported to Idaho within 10 days. Wearing a red jumpsuit with his hands shackled in front of him, Kohberger showed little emotion during Tuesday's brief hearing in a Pennsylvania courtroom in which he acknowledged facing four counts of first-degree murder and a burglary charge. He waived his right to fight extradition. His attorney says Kohberger is eager to be exonerated and should be presumed innocent.

A suspect arrested in connection with the slayings of four University of Idaho students plans to waive his extradition hearing so he can be quickly brought to Idaho to face murder charges. That is according to his defense attorney. Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania arrested Bryan Christopher Kohberger, a 28-year-old Ph.D. student at Washington State University, on Friday. Kohberger defense attorney Jason LaBar said Saturday that Kohberger is eager to be exonerated, and said people should wait to pass judgment until after a fair trial. Prosecutor Bill Thompson said during a press conference Friday that investigators believe Kohberger broke into the University of Idaho students' home "with the intent to commit murder."

Public education brings us all together

We Americans need institutions like public education to keep us together. There are practices that tend to keep us apart. We get our news from different sources with different views. We live in areas that are labeled conservative or progressive. We practice our faith in churches or temples or synagogues or in our own private ways. We all live in the United States of America, but far too many of us live in our own little segment, our own little island.
