The major Jewish holiday commemorates the exodus of ancient Israelites from slavery in Egypt, as recounted in the Torah. Observant Jews avoid leavened grains for Passover, which started Monday, April 22.

Long term stress can take a toll on the body

Stress is a normal human reaction. As a matter of fact, our bodies are designed to experience stress and react to it. It is most often a positive thing, keeping us alert, motivated and able to avoid danger. But — and you knew there was going to be a “but” in this sentence — stress becomes a problem when it continues without relief.

Bird flu is spreading to more farm animals

A bird flu outbreak in U.S. dairy cows has spread to more than two dozen herds in eight states, including Idaho. That comes weeks after the nation's largest egg producer found the virus in its chickens. Health officials continue to stress that the risk to the public is low and that the U.S. food supply remains safe and stable. Commercial milk remains safe and available because pasteurization, a high-heat treatment, kills bacteria and viruses. But there's limited information about possible transmission of the virus in unpasteurized milk or cheese products. That is prompting officials to warn consumers about the known risks of consuming raw milk.

Flower carpets are a labor of love

Each Holy Week, thousands of residents of the colonial, volcano-fringed city of Antigua participate in some of Guatemala's oldest and most popular Easter traditions. Some carry the block-long floats with centuries-old sacred images in turns of more than 100 men, others line the streets with carpets they make in elaborate designs with colored sawdust and tropical flowers, which the float bearers will plod over in nearly daylong processions. For all, it is a laboriously planned but unmissable way to be closer to God as well as to their families and a once tight-knit community that's increasingly diluted by mass tourism.

On his 100th birthday, surrounded by family and friends, Robert Douglas Gwin still was clutching the folded American flag he had been given earlier that afternoon by the Kootenai County honor guard. As his family came person by person to greet him and wish him a happy birthday, he pointed out a patch on his uniform from his Army Signal Corps days. “I sewed that myself,” he said.

Drug that may slow Alzheimer's off to slow start

The first drug shown to slow Alzheimer's hit the U.S. market over a year ago, but sales have lagged and diagnosis and treatment remain complicated. Major hospital systems have taken months to iron out plans to administer Leqembi, which requires regular infusions and imaging scans. Some health insurers have rejected coverage, and doctors expect that some patients will hesitate to take Leqembi. Doctors say it will take years to learn more about how the drug works outside the controlled studies that led to its approval. In the meantime, they say much work must be done to improve diagnosis.

She helped design and implement FDR's New Deal recovery program, following the Great Depression.

AI chatbots offer mental health help despite limited evidence they work

A growing number of AI chatbots are being pitched as a way to address the recent mental health crisis among teens and young adults. Free apps like Earkick can discuss complex emotional problems, offer guided meditation exercises and suggest ways for reframing negative thoughts. But experts disagree about whether these chatbots are delivering a mental health service or are simply a new form of self-help. It's a key question to the future of the industry, because apps that diagnose or treat mental health disorders are subject to federal regulation. Currently, none of the apps offered for free download have been approved to treat depression, anxiety and other disorders.

Bottom line: making "The Fade" series is a lot of fun. Sure, the film may take place in a dystopian society several decades in the future, involving a plot to create an army of child drones as part of a twisted effort to create their version of a better world. But filmmaker Tim Bangle and his son Lukas — the driving forces behind The Other Dog Films — said the movies, as well as the next installment, are about much more than that; they are about hope and not giving up.

Awe and dread: How religions have responded to solar eclipses

Throughout history, solar eclipses have had profound impact on adherents of various religions around the world. They were viewed as messages from God or spiritual forces, inducing emotions ranging from dread to wonder. Ahead of the total solar eclipse that will cross over North America on Monday, it's an appropriate time to take stock of these traditions and beliefs. Some Christians have believed that an eclipse portends the coming of the "end times" that will precede Christ's return to Earth. The Talmud – the collection of writings that constitute Jewish religious law – offers specific blessings for many natural phenomena, but not for eclipses. Instead, it depicts an eclipse as "a bad omen for the whole world."

Some cancer patients can find it hard to tell family and friends

For some cancer patients, sharing the news can be a difficult decision. Not everyone is comfortable telling others, for cultural or privacy reasons _ or because they just don't want to talk about it. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin initially kept his prostate cancer quiet. Kate, Princess of Wales, also waited to publicly disclose her cancer. Their reactions hardly surprised experts. One patient counselor said people sometimes keep it to themselves because they don't want to be identified solely as a cancer patient. In the U.S., death rates from cancer have been declining for decades but it remains the nation's No. 2 killer.
