One of the most beautiful of Christ’s promises is found in the gospel of John, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:1-3)

I was discussing car repairs with a younger friend, a caring person who works with struggling children. She told me that she had a health crisis not covered by insurance, and has spent the last few years paying those health care bills off. She was justifiably proud that she could handle her car repairs financially. She also shared that she wouldn’t go to the doctor if the problem occurred again, but would “get through it” to avoid more expensive bills.

Will families or government prevail on taxes?

The governor’s State of the State Address the first week of session consisted of what I would describe as the Governor’s “Spend and Spend Some More Plan.” The bottom line was a 9.2-percent increase in new state spending. Our legislative response was to pass House Bill 335 (HB335), a tax relief for businesses on the unemployment taxes they pay. This bill is expected to save around $115 million for employers over the next three years. Many conservative legislators have their sights set on additional legislation offering even more tax relief for all citizens. With an approximate $300 million surplus, there are multiple combinations of a grocery-corporate-individual tax package that could benefit the entire state with tax relief instead of only few select groups.

We’ve recently had three mass killings where the shooters had impressive fire power. In the Texas church, 26 were killed, 20 wounded and almost 500 shots fired. In Las Vegas, 58 were killed, 546 injured and more than 1,100 shots fired. In Colorado, one policeman was killed, six people wounded and about 100 shots fired. We know the first two had “large-capacity magazines” (those holding 10 to 100 shots) and can guess that the Colorado shooter probably had them as well. The Las Vegas shooter also had “bump stocks” that allowed machine gun-like bursts from his semi-automatic rifles. Both bump stocks and large-capacity magazines can be purchased online. You need 30 or 40 shots for self-defense? Really?

But, the U.S. Forest Service and former county commissioners are equally irresponsible, as neither bothered to ask Clark Fork before recommending a permanent lock-up of 14,000 acres, 3.5 miles from town.

By law, their agendas must be published beforehand so officials cannot simply kill initiatives or pass tax hikes without public participation. Many of these public bodies post their agendas, minutes, meeting times and locations, and stream their meetings online.

Thank you, believers

A tremendous thank you for all of your involvement this past year as we (Christians) have labored together to proclaim the Kingdom of God in North Idaho. We serve a mighty God, who is good to us all the time. As we enter the new year 2018, we face a changing world, causing fear for some and for many a time of great hope. The Lord continues to bless us and do great things in the lives of people in our region. We have been called to proclaim renewal, revival, and transformation in our areas of influence. We want to rely more and more on the finished work of Christ on the cross and the indwelling power of Holy Spirit to prepare us for continued ministry. We continue to be amazed at the cross-section of people who come through Bonner County and are touched by the word and ministry available in our area. We encourage you to support solid local churches and ministries as well as missionaries, evangelists, etc. who are literally touching the world and speaking directly into our community through conferences and events.

What's a breath of clean air worth these days?

Last week, I drove through Lewiston on my way back home following the holidays. An inversion had settled over Lewiston on New Year’s Eve, trapping stinky and nauseating gas that the Clearwater Paper Mill was pumping into the air. As I drove by on U.S. 95, it was hard to tell whether I was in Idaho or Beijing because the air was so foul. It was a good reminder to me that it is critical that we do everything we can to protect the clean air we still have in Bonner and Boundary counties.

My story is about a man who works really hard and supports a child and falls into the Medicaid gap. He makes too much to qualify for Idaho’s Medicaid program, but not enough to qualify for the ACA health insurance subsidies and of course not enough to afford to buy insurance. He got a small piece of insulation in his eye at work, waited to get treatment because he did not have insurance and ended up in two ERs at a cost of over $7,000 and is now blind in one eye. He qualified for the hospital program that waives bills for low income people so the taxpayers paid his bill.

It is a humbling duty and honor to be identified by the liberal socialist progressives as their watchdog. As the saying goes all press is name recognition. The Lake Pend Oreille School District document requests, numbering approximately 45 in 2017 and of greater quantity in 2016 were submitted to understand why such a high levy amount was sought from taxpayers. LPOSD inferred the document requests cost thousands of dollars, when in reality approximately $287 and some opportunity cost were realized, according to LPOSD documents.

I get this sudden feeling between my belly and my ribs that’s like being punched in the gut. It usually happens when I just messed up in a big way. Today it happened when two wheels of my plow rig found the edge of the road, going just a bit too far pushing snow over a cliff. The front of my vehicle started to drop as I hit the brakes and reached for reverse just in time. The third close call today. It won’t be the last.

SMART goals put you on track for success

The thought of setting goals to many people is boring at best, paralyzing at worst. Admitting that we have control of our own course and the responsiblity of changing unsatisfactory circumstances can be the first, and most frightening hurdle. The temptation to blame others for not realizing our dreams or for feeling “stuck” may be keeping us from turning our dreams into realistic goals.
