Local woman reflects on cancer treatment journey

Breast cancer has changed Elizabeth, a retired teacher in her mid-60s. But not in a bad way. “It is what it is, but it becomes what you make of it,” she said. In September 2020, Elizabeth saw her doctor for her yearly physical exam. She was only supposed to get her cholesterol checked. But she’d noticed pain in her breast since her last mammogram and brought it up.

Cool nights, rain dampen KRC fires

Cool nights, rain and shorter days have enabled the Bonners Ferry Fire District to complete all targets needed to bring the Kootenai River Complex to containment. While fire activity is minimal, they said area residents and visitors to the county's forest can expect to see continued smoke until the snow falls or significant rain occurs.

Most popular fall crop to plant? Garlic

AP's gardening columnist, Jessica Damiano, was surprised to learn recently that the most popular fall-planted bulb in the U.S. appears to be garlic. That's according to Google search trends. More popular than growing tulips or daffodils, and just as easy. Depending on your growing conditions, choose either hardneck or softneck garlic. Hardneck varieties are recommended for northern regions and softnecks are better suited for warmer climates. Garlic plants are heavy feeders, so incorporate a generous amount of compost into the top 3-4 inches of soil. Plant only seed garlic purchased from a reputable supplier, or cloves from the largest, healthiest heads saved from last year's harvest. Avoid supermarket garlic because it is often treated with growth inhibitors.

Steve Johnson will guarantee freedom of choice

Quite a few years ago my son took a college literature class while still in high school, where they had to read “Ceremony” by Lesly Marmon Silko. Though the book portrayed documented abuse of Native Americans by white males, I took offense because it was quite explicit about sexual abuse and voyeurism.

Fall benefit for EMS brings in over $10K

This year’s fundraiser was a success, with about twice as many businesses involved as last year, Duebendorfer said. “The event more than doubled in size from last year and went from being contained to our parking lot with a few handpicked cars, to spreading out over the entire block with over 100 registered vehicles.” Last year, they only used their parking lot. This year, Sandpoint had to close down most of Washington and part of Ponderosa avenues for the festivities, which included live music, food and drink, raffles, games, and giveaways. “It truly takes a village and we are blessed to see our community at work,” Duebendorfer said, adding that the event had more than 20 sponsors. Duebendorfer said the allocation of the funds raised is up to the county’s first responders. This year, the funds have gone to updating communication equipment for the mostly volunteer West Pend Oreille Fire District as well as to the Bonner County Chaplains for upgraded training equipment and dispatch.

Choose wisely by supporting Steve Johnson

Arriving (somewhat apprehensively) in Sandpoint some years back, I really had no idea what to expect. North Idaho is remote, but it does have “that reputation.” What I found, however, was a beautiful landscape, abundant natural and cultural resources, a vibrant community, and many wonderfully kind and thoughtful people.

Man sentenced in battery case

The charges stem from a spat over WiFi in early July at a residence where Valdez had been staying. According to court documents, Valdez blamed the youths for having used up all of the data. He began yelling at the oldest youth, 18, which woke up the other teen, 16, who exited his room and entered the hall where the two were arguing. Neither of the teens could recall what, if anything, was said when the younger of the two exited their room. However, court records alleged that upon exiting the room and standing next to his older brother, Valdez promptly head-butted the younger teen, leaving a red mark on his forehead. The youngest victim said he staggered away and was then punched in the back by Valdez. An officer who responded to the scene testified he saw several red marks on the victim’s back consistent with an altercation.

IDFG: Snapping turtles pose problem in area

McCormack, a non-game biologist for Fish and Game in the Idaho Panhandle, said the turtles are, for now, minor pests – as far as IDFG can tell. Since they pose a threat to many native species, Fish and Game is hoping to nip them in the bud next spring, before anything could get too out of hand. “The main issue they pose,” he said, “is that they are pretty effective predators.” While snapping turtles are not aggressive, they can be dangerous especially for curious pets or kids, McCormack said. The conservation officer also warned that if someone puts their finger too close and the snapping turtle is big enough, they could lose their finger.

Feds extend comment period on trail

“During the scoping period, the Forest Service is seeking comments on what should be included in the comprehensive plan, as well as issues and alternatives to be analyzed in the supporting environmental analysis,” Forest Service officials said. The planned route for the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail starts at the Great Divide in Glacier National Park and crosses through seven national forests and three national parks before finally arriving at Cape Alava, Wash. At this stage, Forest Service officials said the agency is just seeking public input in the ongoing development of the trail’s comprehensive plan. After which, the agency will begin consultation with affected tribes, before finally completing a final draft of the document by next summer. The trail will pass through the Flathead, Kootenai, Idaho Panhandle, Colville, Okanogan-Wenatchee, Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie, and Olympic national forests.

Judging by the turnout of both musicians and listeners, the revival of the local old-time fiddlers group has released a wave of pent-up interest in this unique brand of music. The group, which meets the last Saturday of every month and has a jam session scheduled for this Saturday afternoon, was re-established in May after nearly 20 years of inactivity in the two northernmost counties of Idaho. According to Gary Potratz, state president of the Idaho Old-Time Fiddlers Association, it quickly has become one of the largest districts in the Gem State.

County business, new building regulation process

Jacob Gabell presented an amendment to Title 11 of the Bonner County Revised Code. BCRC 11 addresses building regulations. Gabell said amendment is needed to clarify and refine building regulations. The amendment increases the size of a building that does not require a building location permit square feet to 400 square feet. It also removed a requirement for a building location permit for reconstruction projects and requires a site plan instead of a plot plan for building location permits, including appropriate setbacks from all property lines and environmental features. Another change requires that Panhandle Health District comment on a building location permit within 10 business days of the receipt of the completed application. Gabell said he hopes the amendment provides more synergy between the code, the county, and the health district so they can more efficiently balance development with environmental concerns. Now, PHD must sign off on a project before the county will issue a certification in lieu of occupancy.

Mind's twists and turns all lead to God

Facebook asks, “What's on your mind?” Four words … but set them on a path in most minds and they encounter a maze. Because thoughts constantly take twists and turns. Yes, I've got a lot on my mind. As does most everyone else. It's a winding path, those thoughts. But in the peace of Christ there are no dead ends.

Who are we and what do we stand for?

Its’s been tough lately coping with all the changes happening here. Between virus, smoke and exploding population, it’s hard to keep a cheery attitude. But I know I’m not alone. I depend on my community and I know that in our small town and county we look out for our neighbors. It’s a big part of why I’ve lived in Bonner County for 35 years.

Johnson is a wise and gentle voice of reason

When I visited with Steve Johnson, he told me what he stood for with none of the political blah, blah or the fear-and-smear tactics of his opponent, Scott Herndon. Steve Johnson is passionate about education, and how it boosts confidence, introduces new interests, opens doors, and provides greater earnings opportunities that last a lifetime. This benefits the individual and their families, their community, and North Idaho. It makes for a happier life.

Inside Idaho's $410 million education bill

The Legislature’s Sept. 1 special session was a done deal. But that didn’t stop about 650 Idahoans from calling or emailing Gov. Brad Little’s office about his plan to pour state surplus dollars into tax cuts and education spending. A majority of the calls and emails ran against Little’s proposal — which became House Bill 1, the lone bill considered and passed during the one-day session.

Conservatives only want things their way

Again I find myself questioning the conservative Christians running for elective office. Scott Herndon comes to mind, he professes to be a Christian with his words but his actions speak much louder and they do not appear to be based in any Christianity of which I am aware. He wants to carry a gun to a local music festival saying it's his God-given right, I am not aware of God saying anything about guns at music festivals.

Johnson believes government should serve the people

My fascination with politics began in June 1959 when I attended Boys State in Boise. I still believe public politics is meant to serve the public, not impose narrow, partisan ideas on the citizens of Idaho. So I’m deeply disappointed that the current Idaho Legislature is too often ready to impose its collective extremist views on us. Ironically, traditional Republican philosophy believes small government is the best government. Currently, Republicans in control are eager to use government to impose their moral and political wills on women’s bodies, on shifting public education funds to private schools, even book banning.

Kinderhaven continues its mission to aid children in crisis

At first glance, bipartisan legislation signed into law in February 2018 seems groundbreaking for the protection of children currently in the care of the child welfare system. The Family First Prevention Services Act turns the focus toward keeping children with their families instead of placing them in out-of-home care. And, this is a good thing. But as we all know there is no cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all when it comes to child welfare. After over 25 years, and serving thousands of children in crisis, Kinderhaven, as a result of this legislation and its stringent rules for fostering, was forced to close the only group home in North Idaho.

Local dispatcher gets statewide award

13 years later, it seems to be working out. Last week, Lindsey received the prestigious Public Safety Communications Director of the Year Award from Idaho’s Association of Public Safety Communications Officials. A Priest River High School graduate, Lindsey attended North Idaho College and Spokane’s Apollo College. It was there she studied to become a police officer, before a knee injury led her to change fields. Then, on a whim, she applied for a local dispatching job and has worked her way up the ranks, earning the title of operations manager, and most recently, APCO’s yearly award. Lindsey was surprised when she heard the news about the award a few days before the APCO’s yearly conference. “Never in a million years did I think I would ever get this award,” she said. She dedicated the award to her amazing staff who she said are “the heroes who make my job so easy.”

Vote for the candidate with conservative values

You may have heard that Democrats say they cannot get elected in conservative Bonner County. Some have even run for office in the Republican primary election, while others have registered as Republicans so they could vote in that primary.

October 25, 2022 1 a.m.

Johnson will focus on issues, not divisiveness

Someone disfigured a couple Scott Herndon's signs with the Nazi swastika symbol. Regardless of how intensely one dislikes a candidate, this is never acceptable. And nearly as troubling, Herndon went immediately to social media to blame a local Democratic Party leader. While it's no secret that a lot of local voters, including many Republicans, are extremely mad about his nasty smear campaign against Republican state Sen. Jim Woodward, it's completely unfair of Herndon to blame a Democrat. Instead of tamping down bad behavior, he ramped it up with unfounded accusations.

October 25, 2022 1 a.m.

Candidates should not bear false witness

Herndon's signs being tagged is wrong, but now he knows how Democrats and independents have been targeted in past elections. As for a toxic election environment, his primary campaign against Jim Woodward didn't exactly smell like a bed of roses.

October 25, 2022 1 a.m.

Herndon will defend our natural rights

Both the supreme laws of the U.S. and the state of Idaho are founded on principles of negative rights (basically, the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness and property). They are not founded on established positive rights (like the “right to a given wage” or the “right to healthcare,” or the “right to birth control”).

October 25, 2022 1 a.m.

Want to support the Constitution? Vote for Johnson

It always amusing when Scott Herndon, the Republican candidate for state senator, is noted for supporting the U.S. Constitution. On the contrary, Herndon wants to secede from the federal government and create his own dystopian society. He wants to refuse all federal money which helps veterans and senior citizens as well as health and welfare for the general population of Idaho. He wants to further dehumanize women by making abortion and the right to choose a felonious murder for providers and women alike. He wants to sell public and federal land to developers, close libraries, ban books, and disband public education. All of these goals are simply to make Herndon himself the seat of power; he has no agenda to adhere to the Constitution or work with the federal government, except the right to open carry of guns. And he certainly will not best represent the best views and interests of Idaho.

A testament to wisdom of wild creatures

When I moved here from the Cd’A area in 1980, I bought a great log home on Smith Creek Road off Wrenco Loop. The five-acre property was exactly one mile from Wrenco and boasted a substantial outbuilding which had sheltered the original owners, Ed and Sally Fugle, while they built their house by hand with their own sawmill and on-site trees. I turned the outbuilding into a chicken house and with the gift of five chickens, began my sojourn as a landowner, crop-grower, wood-choppin’ Earth Mother.

Sandpoint girls fall to Pocatello

• 4A GIRLS Pocatello 1 Sandpoint 1 (Pocatello wins 4-3 on penalty kicks) POST FALLS — The Sandpoint Bulldogs fell short in the third-place game against Pocatello on Saturday afternoon at the state 4A girls soccer tournament at The Fields at Real Life. Tied 1-1 after overtime, the Bulldog girls came up just shy of third place when they lost 4-3 in penalty kicks. Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski had mixed feelings about the game and how the season ended following that final whistle. “There are so many subplots,” he said. “Some players overcome this, some players succumb to their emotions and not actually perform. People that do certain things for the team that are pretty selfless, other players that get all the attention, but crumble in the big moments.” Junior Aliya Strock scored Sandpoint’s lone goal at the 45th minute, assisted by freshman Mackenzie Mitchell. When the game made it to penalty kicks, something that the Bulldog girls have practiced a little bit this year, Sandpoint’s first two went wide of the goal. Goaltender Lilliana Brinkmeier nearly had three of the shots against her, but just couldn’t quite get enough of a hand on them. After the first game of the tournament on Thursday, when he had an opportunity to see the rest of the competition, Baranski said he was disappointed that his team came home without a trophy. “I know that if our team had come and played to the ability that they can, we would be competing for a state championship,” he said. Overall though, Baranski remains an advocate for youth sports because situations of disappointment and frustration, such as this one, are inevitable and he believes that it is really important for young people to experience them. “I hope my players respond appropriately and work harder to be better next time,” he said.

Absentee ballot requests increase as election nears

Registered voters have until Oct. 28 to request an absentee ballot

Elections officials in some Idaho counties say interest in absentee voting is increasing ahead of the Nov. 8 general election. As long as they are already registered to vote, Idahoans have until Oct. 28 to request an absentee ballot. Voters can request an absentee ballot through the Idaho Secretary of State’s website www.voteidaho.gov, or through their local county clerk’s office. All absentee ballots need to be received by the local county elections office by the time the polls close at 8 p.m. local time on Election Day, Nov. 8. It is not good enough to drop an absentee ballot in the mail before or on Election Day; the ballots must be received by the county elections office by the time polls close.

Among the areas needing change are the recreation and special sites chapters, which several of the commissioners criticized as resembling more of a catalog about why Bonner County is a beautiful place to live, rather than a land use comprehensive plan chapter. These chapters listed all sorts of locations to visit and things to do, almost as if written to direct tourists rather than officials overseeing land use decisions. At the first of the meetings, held Oct. 4, the commission reviewed the two chapters that were to be revised to better reflect the most recent goals, objectives, and policies. Commission Chair Alan Songstad volunteered to deal with the property rights chapter. Commissioner Debby Trinen chose recreation.

Are you a mosquito magnet? It could be your smell

If mosquitoes love you, new research suggests it may be because of how you smell. A study published Tuesday finds that people who are "mosquito magnets" have high levels of certain chemicals on the skin that are tied to odor. Scientists pitted people's smells against each other in the lab and saw that the bugs swarmed to the same hosts over time. Bad news for the mosquito magnets: It's hard to change your skin acid levels. But some scientists hope the new research can help think up new ways to fight off bites.

Imagine you are a young Idahoan who has been raped by an uncle and are now pregnant and traumatized. Your life is changed forever by what has many times been called "a fate worse than death." But you can't have an abortion: there is a law making that murder. The penalty for murder in Idaho is death or life in prison. For the life of me, I can't see what difference there is between your situation and that of an enslaved woman in pre-Civil War Virginia.
Scott Herndon, God love him, wants to see this happen. He proposed this plank in Idaho's Republican Party Platform this summer:

US sued for pollution from retardant drops on wildfires

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — An environmental group has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Forest Service for allegedly polluting waterways by dropping large volumes of fire retardant from aircraft to fight wildfires. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Montana by Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics of Eugene Oregon. Government data released earlier this year found more than 760,000 gallons of fire retardant were dropped directly onto streams and other waterways between 2012 and 2019. The main ingredients in fire retardant are inorganic fertilizers and salts that can be toxic to some fish, frogs, crustaceans and other aquatic species.

Herndon would be disaster for our schools

Scott Herndon who is running for Idaho state senator for our district would be a disaster for our educational system. He is a proponent for diverting money from public schools to private and religious schools. This creates unequal educational opportunities for our kids and robs our rural public schools of critical funding. To the contrary, Steve Johnson is a retired educator who is running as a write-in candidate.

Steve Johnson is the voters’ choice

During the primary campaign, candidate Scott Herndon demonstrated viciousness and untruthfulness in his attacks on the incumbent senator. A lengthy text from him that blocked my reply made it clear he didn’t want to hear from me; his mind was set. Such absolutism and extremism are evident in his agenda: he would reject funding for Medicaid, public education, Meals on Wheels, highway and road improvements, and veterans’ services, among others. He believes a woman has no right to choose under any scenario. He wants to sell our public lands into private hands.

Dave Lent, R-Idaho Falls, said the 10-member, bipartisan team hopes to put ideas on paper by December, and take a proposal to the 2023 legislative session, which begins in January. Concerns about aging schools, rising property taxes, growth and the state Constitution played into Thursday’s first discussions.

Francis presided over a special evening Mass to commemorate the opening of the three-year church meetings known as Vatican II. The sessions brought the 2,000-year Catholic Church into the modern era by allowing for Masses in the vernacular rather than Latin and a greater emphasis on the role of ordinary faithful in the life of the church. Francis blasted the divisions that ensued between conservatives and progressives as the work of the devil.

Dozens of past and current Idaho Republican officeholders are endorsing the Democratic candidate for attorney general in November's election. Republicans attended a news conference Tuesday at the Statehouse with Boise attorney Tom Arkoosh. Arkoosh announced his candidacy in July after former U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador defeated five-term incumbent Attorney General Lawrence Wasden in the May Republican primary. Arkoosh and the Republicans supporting him say Labrador will turn the office into a partisan base to further his political ambitions. Wasden is known for a legal strategy he describes as even-handedly calling balls and strikes, frequently irking fellow Republicans in ruby red Idaho. Labrador says voters want an aggressive, conservative attorney general.

Land division in Coolin wetlands, again

The parcel in question, located off Warren Beach Road west of Coolin, is over 20 acres and property owners have asked for it to be split into four parcels. The current zoning is rural, 5-acre. If approved, neighbors would have 10 days to appeal. Minor land divisions, or MLDs, are approved administratively in a bundle with the consent agenda. Last business meeting, four MLDs were approved with no discussion by the commissioners. There is a period of public comment before the adoption of the consent agenda, should the public choose to use it. The Coolin wetlands has seen a flurry of development in recent years. Tricore Investments obtained a 65-acre plot of land in 2018 and has since subdivided the property into over 30 smaller parcels – all in a wetland and flood hazard zone.

Herndon acts to protect life, liberty for all

I write in response to Gabrielle Duebendorer’s letter (Daily Bee, Sept. 27) concerning Scott Herndon‘s candidacy for November’s state senate race. I recently watched a movie called "Lifemark". It recounts the story of a mother who saved her child from abortion because people outside the abortion clinic told her that her unborn child had 10 fingers and 10 toes. Eighteen years later, the child thanked her for allowing him to live. When you watch it, bring a pack of tissues. This is not a singular story; this is a representative story of so many children who have been saved by activists who prayed and shared the truth about abortion.

Crews assessing post-fire needs

While a minor storm was expected to push through the area Monday and increase fire activity, no significant movement is expected. The Kootenai River Complex fires, which were started by lightning in mid-August, has burned an estimated 23,131 acres. There are 67 fire personnel assigned to the fire. With the reduced activity and the lower threat, BFRD officials said a Burned Area Emergency Response team is set to start assessing the burned area to determine post-fire recovery needs. BAER teams look at water and soil impacts, erosion potential, vegetation issues, archaeology, and more, to decide what needs to be done to help the forests recover.

Mechanized birds: Wildland firefighting with drone intelligence

The robotic birds of the sky, known colloquially as drones, were a menace to the wildland firefighting community. The mere appearance of a recreational drone in the skies near a wildfire called for the grounding of all firefighting aircraft, giving birth to catchy sayings like “If you fly, we can’t,” and “It’s not worth the view.” While these sayings are still true, drones – also called UAS or unmanned aerial systems – are playing an increasingly important role in fighting wildfires.

Study explores link between vaccines, asthma

A federally funded study has found a possible link between aluminum in some childhood vaccines and persistent asthma, but experts say the study has several shortcomings. The study spotlights a possible connection between aluminum and asthma, but it does not claim the ingredient causes the breathing condition. And its top author says there is no reason to change current vaccine recommendations. Officials say more study is needed to try to confirm the association. It was published Tuesday by the medical journal Academic Pediatrics.

Supreme Court mulls federal water rules in Priest Lake case

Case could provide opportunity for court to rein in what types of waters are subject to a provision of Clean Water Act known as ‘Waters of the United States’

The U.S. Supreme Court opened its term Monday with an Idaho case that could significantly restrict the federal government’s power to enforce clean water laws and prove crucial in determining wetland protections. The oral arguments came just months after the court’s 6-3 conservative majority limited executive authority to address climate change in a case involving federal regulation of greenhouse gases. The clean water case, brought by an Idaho couple seeking to build a house on a plot of land they bought near Priest Lake in the state’s panhandle, provides an opportunity for the court to rein in what types of waters are subject to a provision of the Clean Water Act known as “Waters of the United States.”

Sticky geraniums are delightful garden addition

A true geranium, Sticky Geranium (Geranium viscosissimum) is unlike the geraniums we see commonly in flower pots, which are in a related genus, Pelargonium. Also called Wild Geranium or Cranesbill, the plant's genus name “Geranium” derives from a Greek word meaning “crane” and is descriptive of the long, slender seed pod resembling the bill of a wild crane. The species name “viscosissimum,” and the common name “sticky” refer to the fine, glandular hairs densly covering the leaves and stems that grab onto what ever touches them.
