Worsening problems are not solved by ignoring them

In his letter of Nov. 24, 2019, Jeremy Conlin repeats climate change talking points from both “Natural News” and “CFACT.” Media Bias/Fact Check describes the former as “one of the most discredited sources on the Internet.” CFACT owns and publishes Climate Depot. Media Bias/Fact Check rates Climate Depot as “a strong pseudoscience source based on promotion of human influenced climate denialism propaganda and the use of poor sources who have failed numerous fact checks.” Mr. Conlin says honest teachers should present the “latest facts” to their students. They do. Fortunately, they do not peddle the latest misinformation from the dubious sources that he espouses.

Why so much ado about the climate's changes?

So, Bob Inglis, a former U.S. congressman — he lost to Trey Gowdy — favors another tax on U.S. citizens (the carbon tax). That attitude may be one reason why (In addition to his opposing his local tea party) he lost. He might have been called a RINO. He wants us to “stick to the facts.” It would be good to know just how much human activity affects the atmosphere.

Climate change deniers gambling with the future

A recent anti climate change letter begs a response. The writer’s opinion is that if “thousands of scientists” and “multiple government agencies” all agree on the truth of climate change, then it is definitely “wrong.” He gives no facts, just two philosophical quotes that he thinks apply. The writer then chooses to ignore the volumes of accumulated weather, geologic, oceanic and biological data and climate trends when he states: “there is no evidence for it.”

We are blessed to have such a talented and committed team serve the citizens of Sandpoint. Elected officials, myself included, have asked a lot of city staff to implement the 2018-2020 Strategic Plan. This has been a monumental undertaking and staff has stepped up to the challenge.

For some unexplainable reason, I challenged myself to catch and release a Columbia River redband trout at north 49 degrees — the exact latitude of the United States/Canada border. In doing so, mere inches would separate me from being a legal angler as opposed to an alien without a passport or valid fishing license.

I read that First District Judge Barbara Buchanan is presiding over a murder case now. I am worried that justice will not be served. This judge has plainly shown she is more concerned for the convicted criminal than the victims, even a child. Recently, a convicted pedophile of seven rape charges received just 90 days in jail, not prison. This is the type of justice Judge Buchanan gives out in her court. The convicted pedophile will be out in our community again soon.

This is a plea to the community for help. The Sandpoint Senior Center is in urgent need right now. We recently mailed out a “holiday letter” asking for help from the community for the senior center and DayBreak Center. The letter stated that while we all love to support animals and children during the holiday season, our seniors also need your support. Many of you reached into your pockets and sent in donations, but we are seriously concerned about our finances.

Is letter an attempt to promote leftist agenda?

This Sunday (Nov. 24, 2019) while perusing the Daily Bee’s horrible new website as it bounced back and forth and up and down, to decide on which one of ten free articles to read this month, I clicked on an opinion titled, “The minimum wage is only the beginning.”

'No school November' costing taxpayers plenty

I find it ironic that the tax bill arrives in November showing the increase in taxes from the November 2018 vote on the LPOSD levy and we only have our students in the classroom for 13 days in November and three of those days are on early release Wednesday. Ironically, that tax bill reflecting the levy Increase arrives days after the November 2019 vote on making that a permanent increase. I do not mind paying my fair share to educate the future of our great country, but why are the students and teachers only in the classroom together half of the year?

Before supporting socialism, know what it represents

I read with interest Daniel Radford’s appeal for socialism in the Daily Bee (Nov. 24), but I’m concerned that he may not fully understand what his creed involves. First, socialism is grounded on the assumption that government is society’s natural fix-it agency. The socialist doesn’t look to family, friends, neighbors and voluntary associations to address social and economic needs. For each and every problem, government is the answer.

If you own the media, you own the message

Regarding the letter by Joan Sutton concerning property taxes: Perhaps one solution is only property owners, the ones ultimately footing the bill, should be allowed to vote on matters that require property tax for funding. That would surely be unconstitutional? Yet, aren’t others mandating a “taking” by their vote? For instance, a property owner has several properties. Those properties house 25 voters. It’s a levy/tax that will give their kids and others more stuff, make them “safer.” They think why not? We love new stuff. Twenty-five votes are yes, 1 vote is no. Consider all the out-of-state college attendees that register to vote in Idaho. The message is to vote. Not consider how their vote will impact years later after they return home.

City Beach land swap is a wrong-headed pipe dream

Mayor Shelby Rognstad’s piece supporting the City Beach land swap is unfortunate. The plan or initial concept, much like the War Memorial Field “concept,” which passed in a divided vote by the council, is worth considering, but you’d think there must be more eggs in the basket than this draft. Apparently, there are no other concepts worth considering because the mayor says he will in January ask for approval of the land swap. This is much too soon for such approval with the busy holiday season coming.
