Grow perfect companions in your garden
If you could do just one thing for a successful garden, I would have to recommend companion planting hands down. The second most important thing — to my mind — is natural pest management. Why just those two? Because they are the keys to complete garden success. Interaction between compatible plants and no artificial additions — like pesticides, herbicides and fungicides — make for a strong and healthy garden where ladybugs and lacewings kill the aphids, and bees, butterflies and moths can safely gather nectar and pollinate plants without dying.

As the construction of the new Memorial Field/Barlow Stadium grandstand has begun, it is time for more community input about the entryway that is being planned before it is too late. When this process began in 2011, the all-volunteer Friends of Memorial Field made a strong effort to find out what our community wanted. They held four open public meetings, presented different concepts, and chose the one more people preferred, which was the plan most similar to the grandstand that is being replaced. There was no mention of a huge entryway and, in fact, there was talk of west entry through Lakeview Park.

Time spent with Honor Flight has been an honor
As I begin to wrap up my teaching career at Sandpoint High School, one group I will be giving up will be the Honor Flight Club. I’d just like to take a minute to thank all those who made the club successful and who helped raise the $11,446.22 to give to Inland Northwest Honor Flight in Spokane. It all starts with Tony Lamanna and his staff from INWHF. I was able to attend a trip to Washington, D.C., with 92 World War II veterans and it truly is an amazing experience. Tony’s vision has allowed the trip of a lifetime for many veterans and their families. The staff who puts together the details to make these trips possible is an amazing, dedicated group. We can’t thank them enough for making these trips possible.

INITIAL PUBLIC NOTICE Bonner County Emergency Management Office has applied for a State Homeland Security Grant Program, 2015 grant funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to fund the Clark Fork backup generator project in Bonner County-Clark Fork; 44 CFR Part 9.12, FEMA gives early notice under Executive Order (EO) 11988, Floodplain Management or EO 11990, Wetland Protection; since this action is located in or affects the floodplain or may affect wetlands. The project site is located in or affects the floodplain of Johnson Creek Road along the Clark Fork River Latitude: 48.137878, Longitude: 116.192176. The purpose of the project is to provide backup power to the repeater site. Without this generator radio communication and data connectivity would be lost in this area during a power failure. The proposed action includes: The installation will consist of placing 12 inches of 3/4 minus rock on flat ground to form a stable base. The treated wooden base will then be set on top of the rock, and the generator will be set on top of the base. A propane tank would be installed on four concrete piers and propane would be piped to the generator by trenching 10 foot length x 18 inch depth x 12 inch wide trench. The electrical installation will then be accomplished by installing a conduit from the generator to the communication building with a 24" x 10' x 12" trench hooking up the equipment and transfer switch. After initial setup the generator will be ready to go into standby and provide power when commercial power fails. Comments concerning the proposed action will be accepted from the affected public; local, state and federal agencies; and other interested parties in order to consider and evaluate alternatives and the environmental impacts of the proposed action. Comments should be made in writing, sent to the point of contact listed below, and postmarked within 15 days of publication of this notice. Many of the details that have been published are facts only the killer would know. Seems the only competent people on scene were the medical first responders. Not informing the public? The ostensible reason was to alert teenage parents in the area about what goes on at these affairs to include heavy drinking, drug use and sexual activities. There seemed to be an expression of sorrow about their attendance at these affairs, but also an acceptance of their “right” to conduct themselves in such a questionable manner. After reading these articles, I came away with what I consider to be a more profound question — if these teenagers acknowledge their illicit and dare I say it their immoral activities — why do they participate? Is it to “belong”? To have friends at any cost? Is it a fear to be an individual and stand for principles that give you the courage to say “no?”

We support Gary Suppiger for LPOSD School Board Trustee Zone 2. As Gary’s neighbors, we have known him and his family for 23 years. He’s lived in Cocolalla for 25 years, is a small business owner, and has had three children go through the LPOSD schools. Gary has always been involved in the education of his kids, continuing to volunteer at Sagle Elementary teaching math two mornings a week, although his children have not attended for years. Gary understands the value of education for all kids. He is analytical, asks thoughtful questions, and will make decisions that will continue to improve the already great school system that we have here in LPOSD. He will hold the board, administration, teachers, and students to high standards. Most importantly, he will make decisions that are best for the students.

I am retired and writing my first-ever letter to the editor to express my support of making the Scotchman Peaks a wilderness area. Needless to say at my age many things have changed some for the better and others not. I like to tell the story of living in the Los Angeles basin in 1980 and waking one morning after a rain storm and seeing the city surrounded by snow covered mountains. People were out taking pictures and that was the only time I saw the mountains in two years. Today we frequently go back to L.A. and the mountains are visible daily. The people and government working together addressed the air pollution problem and that is one example of a change for the better. As a contrast, in the town I grew up in (a suburb of Milwaukee, Wis.), the pastural farms with pheasants and other wildlife have been replaced by an endless subdivisions. Being nostalgic for the old days seems right to me and these changes are unfortunate.

As a parent with children in the Lake Pend Oreille School District for the last 12 years, it is important to support a candidate for trustee who demonstrates commitment and understanding of the needs of our children. His own children as well as those who grow up beside them benefited from his activism.

Sadly, the current LPOSD board trustees are neither proactive nor reactive but rather, status quo. Rarely do they ask in-depth questions in school board meetings before signing on to whatever item or strategy has been proposed by the administrators. Alternatives to important issues are not produced or give short shrift. This go-along-to-get-along attitude must change if we are to encourage and produce the standard of education or students deserve and at a level of fiscal ability the residents of the district can afford.
